Thiruvangad Temple

Brass Pagoda..

Thiruvangad Sree Ramaswami temple is one of the four major shrines dedicated to Lord Sree Rama in Kerala. The main diety is Lord Sri Rama. The Idol is carved out of Krishna sila in 5 feet height and consecrated facing eastwards.

The presiding diety Sree Rama reverently referred to local people from time immemmorial as Perumal. The idol of Ramadasa Hanuman is consecrated in front, slightly towards the left in Mukhamandapam which is also a special feature of sreekovil.

Of the four famous Sree Rama Swamy temple in Kerala, "Tiruvangad Sree Rama Swamy Temple" under the Malabar Devaswom Board has certain specialities of its own. The Sanctum Sanctorum of this particular temple is neither circular nor square or Gaja prishtam. This type of architecture is termed as "Vesara". The palatial Two Storied Sanctum Sanctorum has its roofing paved with teak wood panels covered with copper sheets and adorned with two golden domes (Thazhikakudam).Hence the temple is known as "Brass pagoda"

KIRATHARJUNEEYAM the story of Arjuna's encounter with Lord Shiva is depicted through the beautiful carvings on the twenty wooden pillars supporting the ceiling of the sanctum Sanctorum. The dragon faces in the corners are the very good examples of legendary carpentership of the old days Perunthachans. The skill of the carpenters can be clearly seen from the fact that the points where the wooden structures are joined together are not vibsible. It is our primary duty to see that such a wonderful structure has to be preserved without any blemish to hand over to our posterity.
